Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which parts of a damaged joint are removed and replaced with a metal, plastic, or ceramic prosthesis. The prosthesis is engineered to recreate the movement of a normal, healthy joint.[1]
Numerous types of arthroplasty exists ranging from complete replacement of everyside of the joint (total joint replacement) or only one articular surface (hemiarthroplasty), and various other procedures exist which attempt to realigne the joint (e.g. osteotomies) or resurfacing with tissue.[2]
Why Recommend[edit | edit source]
Numerous conditions give rise to joint pain and disability and may lead patients to consider joint replacement surgery. Joint pain often comes from damage to the articular cartilage, be it from from arthritis, a fracture, or another condition.
After nonsurgical treatments have been tried eg medications, physical therapy, and activity modifications , and pain and disability persist arthroplasty may be offered.[1]
